Alleviate Persistent Neck Pain With Physical Therapy

Have you ever had one of those days at work or school when your neck just won’t stop bothering you? Or maybe turning your head to check for cars is difficult or painful. Regardless, neck pain can really impact your day and make life less enjoyable.

But there’s good news! At National Physical Therapy, we’ve got a team that knows just how to help you feel better and give you tips to keep the pain away.

Most of the time, neck pain happens because something is wrong with a muscle or joint. Maybe you suffered an injury after a car accident, or maybe the pain developed due to poor posture. Figuring out what the real source is can be difficult, but with the help of our experienced therapists, you can get to the root of your problems and, more importantly, get the solutions you’re looking for.

Our therapists will use treatments like specific stretches, hands-on techniques, and strength exercises that are tailored for immediate and lasting relief. Our ultimate goal? To help you return to a life you can enjoy to the fullest.

Take action today! Request an appointment and set the wheels in motion for the lasting relief you deserve.

Source of Neck Pain: Causes and Symptoms

Neck pain is a multifaceted condition, and its origins can vary widely from person to person. Whether your discomfort starts from an unfortunate car accident or something that seems insignificant, like maintaining an improper posture while working at your desk, our team can help.

First, it’s important to understand that there are two broad categories of neck pain:

  • Acute neck pain develops suddenly, usually due to an injury, and typically resolves within a few weeks.
  • Chronic neck pain is neck pain that lingers for more than three months, past the time the underlying injury would have healed.

These two types are often connected. For example, a minor acute issue (like a crick in the neck) could potentially develop into a chronic problem that disrupts your daily life. Addressing acute neck pain immediately can help you avoid long-term discomfort.

But what actually causes neck pain? Well, it can vary from person to person. Some common culprits include:

  • Whiplash-related injuries (very common after car accidents)
  • Bulging or herniated discs (which often result in additional symptoms such as sharp, radiating pain into the shoulders or arms)
  • Poor posture or a sedentary lifestyle
  • Age-related degeneration in the cervical spine

Luckily, our physical therapists are skilled at identifying these contributing factors and formulating an effective treatment plan tailored to alleviate your specific symptoms.

We’ll start with a comprehensive evaluation, including gathering as much information as possible about your health, previous history of neck pain, and most recent episode.

Next, we’ll conduct a physical examination, including a hands-on assessment of your neck and upper back muscles. We’ll assess your posture and movement patterns to identify any restrictions or limitations contributing to your pain.

Our treatment programs are built on several key elements, all aimed at facilitating the health of your neck:

  • Hands-on Therapy and Custom Exercises: Our expert therapists use specialized manual treatments to free up restrictions and alleviate tension in soft tissues.  We’ll also develop personalized exercise routines aimed at targeting the source of your pain to improve mobility and strength. These techniques are particularly beneficial for acute neck pain stemming from a clear injury.
  • Posture Correction: Poor posture is a significant contributor to long-term neck pain. Working with you, our therapists will guide you through the steps to correct your posture, effectively alleviating muscle strain on your neck and shoulders.
  • Ergonomic Evaluation: Our therapists will provide practical recommendations for your work and home environments that can help minimize any physical strain on your neck and shoulders. We will also introduce you to stress-minimizing methods that can be seamlessly integrated into your work life.

We are committed to working closely with you to craft effective, proactive programs to restore mobility and contribute to overall well-being.

July brings 4th of July celebrations, and while enjoying fireworks and picnics, it’s essential to prioritize safety. Here are some expert tips from National Physical Therapy:

  • Stay Hydrated: With the summer heat, dehydration is a concern. Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated during outdoor activities.
  • Firework Safety: If you plan to handle fireworks, follow safety guidelines strictly. Mishandling can lead to burns and accidents.
  • Healthy Picnic Choices: Choose nutritious picnic options like salads, grilled veggies, and lean proteins. Limit sugary drinks and snacks that can lead to energy crashes.
  • Mind Your Posture: Whether watching fireworks or dining at a picnic, maintain good posture to prevent back and neck strain. Sit upright and use cushions for support if needed.

By focusing on safety and making healthy choices, you can have a memorable and healthy 4th of July celebration!

Cool off and celebrate in style with these refreshing Red, White, & Blue Patriotic Popsicles—perfect for your Fourth of July festivities!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup greek yogurt (substitute coconut milk, coconut cream, or coconut yogurt)
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1 cup strawberries
  • honey, agave, or other sweetener (optional)

Make your white stars by making white, star-shaped “ice cubes” out of the greek yogurt (To avoid mess, use a syringe to easily fill the compartments). Meanwhile, make a puree with blueberries, adding optional sweetener if desired. Add a white star to the bottom of a flat bottomed popsicle mold or small cups with a flat bottom. Immediately cover them with your blueberry puree and freeze again. Once frozen, add a layer of yogurt or coconut. Place the popsicle stick into the yogurt layer. Use some aluminum foil to hold the stick up, and then place them into the freezer to freeze the stick in place. Puree the strawberries. When the yogurt layer is frozen, cover it with a layer of strawberry puree and freeze again. Follow the process with one more layer of yogurt and one more layer of strawberry puree. When ready to serve, ease the popsicles out gently by warming the sides of your cups with warm water while you gently pull on the stick.
